Versilia, Tuscany

Versilia is situated in north-western Tuscany in the province of Massa-Carrara and Lucca.
To its west lies the Ligurian sea, the Apuane Alps to its east, north is Marina di Carrara and south the lake of Massaciuccoli.
Renowned area of well equipped private beaches, rich in cultural events, prestigious restaurants and shops in the centres of Torre del Lago Puccini, Viareggio, Lido di Camaiore, Marina di Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi.
  • Viareggio's promenade starts from the wharf and continues virtually uninterrupted until Forte dei Marmi, taking in bars and pastry shops, art nouveau style villas, fresh pine woods, stores stocked full of the latest fashions in clothing and footwear. The town is famous also for its colourful float parade at carnival time.
  • Marina di Pietrasanta and Lido di Camaiore, between Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi, are ideal for family vacations. Here too is an uninterrupted promenade with bars and shops, where the young and very young pass the evenings in endless strolls up and down the seafront.
  • Elegant Forte dei Marmi has been popular since the last century, with its villas and resident VIPs, and its luxury stores. Drinking an aperitif in the centre of town, in the evening, there is always the chance one might come across some celebrity hidden from view by hat and dark glasses. The clubs of Forte dei Marmi are among the most exclusive in Tuscany, and perhaps Italy.
The area further inland offers also jewels of ancient beauty and rural tranquillity.
  • The Apuane Alps, mountains of up to 2000 metres behind the town of Carrara, are the source of the famous Carrara marble used even by Michelangelo, and the white marble mines can be seen on clear days as far away as the beaches, looking almost like snow on the mountain tops. This area is a veritable paradise for those interested in trekking.
  • Lucca has one of the most beautiful historical-centre of Italy, perfectly enclosed by thick sixteenth century walls that has always been kept intact.
  • The ancient, beautiful Pietrasanta is an important cultural centre with artisan tradition kept alive by the local workshops and atelier, by the firms specialized in the artistic-mosaic sector and by many artistic-foundries.
  • Bagni di Lucca, up on the hills, besides nature trails in the countryside, boasts thermal baths famous since the XVIII century.
  • The Lake of Massaciuccoli, part of the Park of San Rossore, Migliarino and Massaciuccoli, founded in 1975, is suitable for visits with children due to the wooden scaffolding for bird watching among the reeds.
